Cedar Manor is very much a family affair and guests, returning time and again, tell us that they feel more like old friends than paying clients. The welcome is warm, the service personal and the attention to detail meticulous – because we’re passionate about creating an experience which you’ll fondly remember for years to come.
The property started life as a Victorian country house but now offers boutique accommodation in ten individually styled rooms and suites. We’ve lovingly refurbished the interiors, retaining much of the original character whilst adding bold contemporary furnishings, colours and design touches along with all the latest creature comforts – everything is supremely homely yet luxuriously indulgent. All of our rooms feature state of the art en-suite bathrooms as well as flat screen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk, hairdryers, free wi-fi, dressing gowns and REN toiletries.
Surrounded by mature gardens, only a short stroll to the lake, and with wonderful views of the surrounding fells it’s a serene setting for a relaxing break, a romantic escape or a special celebration. Windermere town centre, with its attractive collection of cafes, shops, restaurants, rail station and other attractions is less than ten minutes’ walk away.
With so many culinary hotspots on the doorstep we don’t serve lunch or dinner – but our Cumbrian Grill breakfast menu will set you up for a day of adventures in the surrounding national park. Our lounge and bar is a convivial space for lazy relaxation with a good book and a coffee, or an evening drink or two after an energetic day in the outdoors.
We have a passion for excellence that’s immediately apparent once you step through the door. If you haven’t stayed with us before the fact that we’ve won over 30 top awards, recognising everything from the quality of the guest experience to our green tourism efforts, will hopefully encourage you to visit.

A little about "us"
Cedar Manor is our home, as well as your holiday home. We – Caroline and Jonathan – have been here for 13 years and we still appreciate, every single day, how lucky we are to live in this corner of heaven.
It was originally a country house retreat, and that’s what we set out to recreate, a true luxury “retreat” from the stresses of everyday life and yet really close to everything that the Lake District has to offer.
The house itself was built in 1854, designed by the same architect, J.S. Crowther, as St Mary’s Church across the road. Crowther also designed the house at Holehird (famed for its gardens) in Windermere, but he’s best known for major restoration and repairs to Manchester Cathedral.
Cedar Manor is also hailed for its gardens. They may be on a smaller scale but we win garden awards every year, and everyone who comes to stay appreciates the lawn, the terrace patio for drinks before dinner, and the magnificent cedar tree which dominates the entrance.
That’s what we fell in love with when we first came here, Caroline the city girl who had never seen anything so lovely; Jonathan, who already knew the Lakes well, realising this was something very special indeed.
The house was a rather tired hotel back then, but we set out on a programme of restoration, renovation and transformation. It’s been a labour of love, the new roof, plumbing, wiring, the re-designing and decorating of the most sumptuous rooms in the Lakes. Ten gorgeous, distinctive rooms, including the luxury Coach House suite, the jewel in the crown of our designer Alison Tordoff.
We’ve put our hearts and souls into this project, assisted by the best craftsmen and most talented of designers. And at the heart of everything we’ve done has been care for the environment, our wonderful Cumbrian landscape. Our achievements in sustainability, alongside luxury and customer service, have been recognised with national and international awards.
We’ve found time to keep on exploring the lakes and the fells, so that we can expertly advise visitors with personal knowledge. We take part in the Lakeland Trails races and local parkruns. Jonathan’s ticking off the Wainwrights, Caroline is involved with Windermere Arts and the local am-dram team at Ambleside Players.
The work of our artist friends can be seen around the hotel, and you can buy items – ceramics, jewellery, cards and prints – in our Welcome Lounge. And welcome is what it’s all about. We love to welcome people here, and we know how to make our guests feel special. In another life Jonathan, who worked for the Forte and Thistle hotel groups, was also manager of Raffles nightclub in Chelsea where he would chat with celebrities and royalty, so you will all get a royal welcome here.
We also support a number of local charities, notably Lake District Foundation who disperse to local smaller charities such as Northern Reds (squirrels) and Fix the Fells. We are also involved with Room to Reward, giving the chance for charity volunteers to come and have a well-deserved break, and Hospitality Action – raising funds for anyone working in our industry who has fallen on hard times.
