The world will be watching this summer when the decision will be made on the Lake District’s bid for World Heritage site status.

For three years, since the Government announced it would submit the Lake District for consideration in the category of ‘cultural landscapes’, the Lake District National Park has been working with 25 partners, including the National Trust, Cumbria County Council and Forestry Commission to create a compelling case for international recognition.

Spring at Cedar Manor Hotel

Visitors to the Lake District notice small changes each season. Shops in Windermere close, and re-open as something else. New cafes and bars appear.  New trees are planted, old ones are cleared to re-open views and vistas. And we’re always doing something new here at the Cedar Manor…redecorating rooms, new planting in the garden, new dishes on the menu.

We’re getting excited about an event that’s happening here in the Lakes later this summer which will stir longings for everyone who’s ever wanted to run away to a desert island.

Well, not exactly “desert”, but in one of our favourite-ever books, Swallows and Amazons, two families of children are allowed to sail away, on their own, and camp on an island in the lake.

Lake District Backgammon Championship at Cedar Manor Hotel

A champion day on the boards

It was a nail-biting day when 16 of the country’s top backgammon players turned up here at the Cedar Manor for the fourth annual Lake District championship.

There were many tightly-fought contests before Bradford’s Steve Lee took the honours – a two night stay here and £100 cash prize.

He claimed victory after a 7-3 win over Pol Lapidakis in what’s now regarded as the north-west’s blue riband championship  event.
